A Silent Crisis: Diagnostic Errors and the Urgent Call for Change
In early April our Co-Founder, Charlotte Korte, met with the OECD’s Deputy Director of the Directorate for Employment, Labour and Social Affairs, Mark Pearson, and Health Policy Analyst, David Kelly, at the 7th Global Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety in the Philippines, where they presented insights from the OECD's paper, The Economics of Diagnostic Safety– OECD Health Working Papers No. 176. According to the OECD’s recent report, The Economics of Diagnostic Safety, diagnostic errors (including delayed, missed, or incorrect diagnoses) are the single largest source of serious patient harm. Most people will be affected by a diagnostic error in their lifetime and up 80% of harm caused by diagnostic error is preventable. The economic burden is substantial, with unsafe care accounting for nearly 13% of healthcare spending in high-income countries. Read more in our latest blog...
On the 19th of February we made our oral submissions to the Parliamentary Health Select Committee in support of our petition for an independent Patient Safety Commissioner.
Our major project at the moment is lobbying for the establishment of an independent Patient Safety Commissioner. Find out more about the Patient Safety Commissioner here... The Health Consumer Advocacy Alliance is a collective of experienced healthcare advocates who share a common passion for creating positive, effective and lasting change. Our founders have a common standpoint; that health care as it is now is not working, that the experience of New Zealanders in the health system is not what it should be. By working together and pooling our experience we identify areas and opportunities where we can facilitate change within the healthcare system and ensure that our voice, the consumer voice, is heard.
